Mr O’Shea

My haste at this exciting news, and my taxi arriving early (living without Vera was costing me a fortune!), meant I arrived at the office wearing odd socks and the most awful tie. I believe the tie was a Secret Santa gift from around ten years ago. But it was of little matter because we had a strong new lead on Kilmer’s accomplice.

Dexter was generous in her statement that it was Mel who found him. It was, in fact, the result of a combination of factors — the mobile number Pussy had shared, Mel’s sketch, and Dexter’s IT skills. “Here, Gramps, meet Logan O’Shea. One time cellmate of the dastardly Mr Kilmer and perverted purchaser of creepy mannequins.”

The face on the screen looked like the mirror image of Mel’s artistic rendition. “Are you sure it’s him?” I asked.

“Absolutely.” Dexter preened. “Mel has already taken a screen print to the shopkeeper to verify. We have images of him on CCTV footage from a petrol station forecourt around the corner from the shop filling up his car a few days earlier, with some rather stiff companions in the rear seat. Look!” Dexter flipped tabs. “And I traced Pussy’s mobile phone call to a cell tower mere feet away from the address he gave the parole office. If this isn’t our man, I’ll eat Phyllis for dinner.”

“Well, Dexy, for Phyllis’s sake, I hope you are right.” Sharon wrapped an arm around my upper back, her hand giving my right shoulder a gentle squeeze. “Hopefully, we’ll have one less thing to stress about now. Shall I call the police?”

“And say what? That Dexter here has illegally hacked into the local phone network and stalked Kilmer’s former cellmate on social media? No, I have to confront this Logan O’Shea myself. See what he has to say for himself.”

Mel raised a hand. “Er, sorry, Boss. But we all discussed this before you arrived. There is no way you should go anywhere near this man after what happened to you last night.”

“After what happened to me? I fainted. That’s all. Hugely embarrassing for a man of my stature, I admit, but I am perfectly fine.”

Sharon tightened her grip. “There is to be no further discussion on the topic. I’ll call PC Harding, or Sergeant Woods, and one or both of them can have a quiet word with Mr O’Shea. I’m sure they will be discreet.”

“Shaz! This man has been working for Kilmer. Threatening you. He’s probably the one who bugged our homes. If you think I’m going to let the likes of Woods and Harding deal with this low life you don’t know me very well at all.”

“How about I go and suss him out? It’s very possible he won’t recognise me.” Mel offered.

“Or he will from your stupid Facebook post. No, I’ll go.” Dexter stood up, stretched, and reached for her jacket. “He obviously hasn’t seen me. Only heard my voice through the listening devices. Or there is no way he would have given me a brown wig.
